Heart Failure Staging

Stage A

Literally anything that puts someone at further risk for HF such as HTN, HLD, DM, whatever (Rarely billed outside of cardiology practices I assume)

Stage B

Physiological but asymptomatic changes that are indicative of progression to HF

Stage C

Symptomatic HF resulting in syncope, palpitations, angina, etc.

HF w/ preserved ejection fraction

LVEF WNL but symptomatic for heart disease due to other factors

HF w/ reduced ejection fraction

LVEF decreased from normal range, >50%

HF w/ improved ejection fraction

Prior reduced LVEF which improved due to resolution of conditions leading to reduced LVEF, procedures, etc.

Stage D

End stage HF resulting in frequent hospitalizations
